Open Letter to my Father in Law, by Jermal Smith
Dear Charles,
Sir, heaven has welcomed another luminous soul, one who, while walking this earth, showed us the shimmering threads that bind families together and unveiled the power of unconditional love in action. Your absence aches in the hearts of those who knew you. In your passing, I lose not just a cherished father-in-law, but a friend who taught me the liberating dance of tears, the beauty of vulnerability, and the precious, fleeting nature of every joyful moment.
For your children, Lori, Dorthy, Charlie, and Nicole, you were Dad. For me, Charles, you were the man who welcomed me into this tapestry of love and family. You were a confidante, a silent cheerleader, a hand always open to mine. You taught me that strength doesn’t lie in being stoic, but in allowing your heart to speak, mourn, and celebrate unashamedly. You showed me that tears are not a surrender, but a cleansing rain, nourishing the seeds of joy planted deep within.
We carry your legacy as a torch, finding solace in each other, strength in your memory, and hope in the belief that we’ll meet again.
Rest in the peace of a life well-lived, loved, and remembered.
